7 Reasons Why Play is Important to Your Child

When it comes to a child's education, most people think of reading, writing, and arithmetic. However, one of the most important aspects of a child's learning development is play. Through play, children learn critical life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and resilience. Here are just seven of the many benefits of playtime for children.

1. Play develops motor skills.

Running, climbing, jumping, kicking, throwing and catching are all examples of gross motor skills that children develop play. These skills require the use of large muscles groups and can be further developed through unstructured play time outdoors. Playing catch with a family member or friend, shooting hoops at a the park  or even riding a bike around the neighborhood are all great ways for children to improve their gross motor skills.

2. Play promotes social skills.

Through play, children have the opportunity to interact with other kids and adults. They learn how to share, take turns, and cooperate with others. They also learn how to express themselves non-verbally through their actions and facial expressions. Many social skills are learned during cooperative games such as team sports, but they can also be learned during pretend play or while working on a group project.

3. Play improves cognitive skills.

Cognitive skills are those related to thinking and problem solving. Logic puzzles, building blocks, Legos, connect 4, memory games, mazes, and pattern recognition toys are all great examples of toys that can help children develop cognitive skills. But it's not just traditional toys that can help here; simple everyday items such as recycled boxes or cloth scraps can also be used in ways that encourage cognitive development in children.

4. Play develops creative skills

Creative play gives children a chance to use their imaginations and express themselves in unique ways. Through creative play, children learn how to think outside the box and come up with new ideas. Drawing, painting, coloring, sculpting with clay, making homemade musical instruments (pots and pans work great for this!), dancing around the living room - all of these activities give children a chance to tap into their creative side and have some fun in the process!

5. Play cultivates emotional skills

When children engage in open-ended play without rules and boundaries (think free play!), they're given the opportunity to work through any emotions they might be feeling at the moment  - happy ones like excitement or laughter, sad ones like disappointment or frustration; or even mad ones like anger or jealously. Working through these emotions during play can help teach kids how to better deal with them when they arise in other areas of their lives outside of playgrounds and sandboxes.

6. Play enhances language and communication skills.

Children learn new words while they play. Singing songs, reading stories, or playing games that involve turn-taking help kids practice using spoken language to communicate with others. Through play, kids also learn the meaning of body language and facial expression. All of these communication skills are important in helping children interact successfully with other kids and adults.

7. Play boosts self-esteem.

Children feel good about themselves when they're able to do things successfully. When they try new things (within their skill level) during playtime and succeed, it boosts their self-confidence. This increased self-esteem will stay with them throughout their lives and help them cope better with stressful situations.

Playing with your child is not only enjoyable - it 's an important activity that can benefit their learning in many ways! From cognitive development to social skills to fine motor control, playtime has numerous benefits that will help your child grow into a happy and successful individual. So next time your little one wants to engage in some good old-fashioned fun, go ahead and let them - it just might be the best thigs you can do for them!
